"As an archio-disciplinary apparatus, Panopticism represents nothing less than a sustained attempt to make power operate without a transcendent qualifier or a corporeal counterpart. Panopticism can only be characterized as a micro-physics of power inasmuch as it operates without any need of physical intercession by trained watchers. In the end, the Panopticon is an architectural apparatus that naturalizes interrogatory relations without necessarily enacting them.³⁷ It is the vision of a top-down power that is exercised from the bottom up, or even a system of power that has no need of subjective intervention at all — only subjective variation and auto-attunement, (or auto-atonement as Bentham envisioned it).^38"
